Default HELP. LO projectile vomit after I took Bentyl

I was in the ER friday for upper abdominal pain and nausea. They prescribed me Phenergan, Vicodin and Bentyl(commonly used in people with IBS to slow down the GI tract). I made sure to mention that I was nursing and the nurse said that these meds would be ok. I should've have looked it up myself. I took a bentyl at 3 today and have nursed him a couple times since then and now he is projectile vomiting. I'm pretty confident it's the Bentyl. Thats the only thing that was different with our routine today. This was the first time I tried it since it was prescribed to me.

My question is how long till I can nurse him again? When will this be out of my milk?

I feel so bad right now. I'm not taking the Phenergan and I have only taken two Vicoden in the last three days. I looked up the Bentyl and it says its contraindicated in nursing moms. Great. I really wish I would've looked it up instead of relying on the ER nurse.

He's 12mos and ways 20 lbs. He's thrown up 4 times in 3 hours.

Know that if the information you got that it's contraindicated doesn't mean it's "not safe". The pharm. companies don't do their own testing on the medications they create - so they say that as a CYB (cover your butt) tactic. Which is fine IMO... they leave it up to other people to do the testing. SO far I can't find anything on it but I'll keep looking - frankly - most meds hardly pass into the milk you baby probably got so very little it's NOT due to that. (JMO)

You'll see this on this page :
Quote:
BENTYL is contraindicated in infants less than 6 months of age and in nursing mothers
and that means infants older than six months they must rx it for... still looking

then there's this:
Quote:
Safety and efficacy of dicyclomine hydrochloride in pediatric patients have not been established.
again that doesn't mean it's NOT safe - just it's not been tested.

Dr Hale isn't even sure with young babies... see more of what he says here

Maybe your pain was a bug and baby has it now??
Have you called your childs doc to ask them?

BRB

okay - so this trusted site says it shouldn't be used. Take that for what it's worth... Because it's basically because it hasn't been studied. BUT Reading this section here and I come away with thinking if it were a new mom I'd think it's not safe to give as the potential for milk supply issues are there - but the last line qualifies that a bit more:

Quote:
Anticholinergics can inhibit lactation in animals, apparently by inhibiting growth hormone and oxytocin secretion.[2][3][4][5][6] Anticholinergic drugs can also reduce serum prolactin in nonnursing women.[7] The prolactin level in a mother with established lactation may not affect her ability to breastfeed.
See more here

If I were you - I'd call the ER and ask to get the nurse that gave that to you to tell you where she found it was safe - because from what I can tell there's nothing that says it IS safe or ISN'T safe... even the go to (Dr Hale) give precautions.

I still think you're LO is vomiting because he has a bug .. but thats JMO again - hoep you both are well soon!
