Question Synthroid, safe for breastfeeding?

I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism and might start to take Synthroid. My Ped said that it's ok, but to "take caution." LactMed says it's ok too. Is anyone out there taking this while breastfeeding?

Yep - I was diagnosed as hypothyroid during a routine screening right after I got pregnant and have been taking Levothyroxine ever since. And continuing to breastfeed my now 18.5 mo old son.

From what I've read - low thyroid levels can negatively affect breastmilk supply, so I have my thyroid levels monitored closely and my meds dose occasionally gets adjusted.

I am on Synthroid also - perfectly safe for beastfeeding!

Next time you refill at the pharmacist, ask for details and they will show you some specifics in their drug books. Synthroid is rated a level 'A', which is the safest you can get for breastfeeding. It was very reassuring to me, as I was so scared to take anything.

My Dr. gave me comforting advice, my baby needs ME to be healthy. You too

Yup, me too. My doctor assured me it's pretty much like the "real thing", and no reason to be concerned about the baby getting any of it.

I'm in the same boat... Hypothyroidism for about 8 years now and been taking synthroid since - including through pregnancy and breastfeeding... No problems at all...

Good luck!
