Default Need advice on 9 month old weight gain

Hello, just to start I love everything about this site you guys are great.
Well here's what's going on LO is 9mths on 3/17 last weight at peds 14.13lbs, 27" on 3/8 on 3/5 took to ER 15.7lbs high temp he's fine. Peds says growth is low wanting me to supplement or take for failure to thrive test. Went to Kellymom check growth chart. If I'm reading it right his weight is low but height ok. I've had issues with peds scale in the past being off a pound. They pretty much blow me off. I don't want to supplement, but peds says he could have growth issues. I didn't have these issues w/ my 1st. Plenty of wets and poopys. In fact some days poop in 3-4 diapers. He's on solids, loves to play, cruises, crawls, won't stay still. He's been very active since 6mths. Please help me again.

Can you post a complete weight history for us? In general, a baby who seems happy and healthy, is meeting milestones, growing in some dimension, and producing adequate diapers is a baby who is happy and healthy.

Maybe see another pediatrician? Someone who can look at your baby with completely fresh eyes?

Thanks for posting that! Based on his history, I personally wouldn't be concerned. Your LO isn't a big baby, but he sure is a consistent baby! He's been pretty much following the same curve right up the chart (I think we've both been looking at this one, for breastfed baby boys: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/chart2.html).

I don't know why your pediatrician is so concerned. You might want to ask what charts he's using. If he's measuring your baby against the charts for formula-fed babies, that could be the issue, since formula-fed babies tend to gain relatively more weight than their breastfed peers during the second half of the first year. This often makes breastfed babies appear to be slipping down the %iles.

That being said, it's not like there's nothing you can do. You can nurse more, you can offer high-calorie solids (avocado, meat, beans, whole milk yogurt and cheese), and you can add some olive oil to your LO's low-calorie solids (e.g. veggies and fruits). I'm not saying you have to take that approach, or even that you should! Just that you can.

my baby put on 13 oz between 6 and 9 months. She was and is fine. Her pediatricians did not worry at all (I did but that is another story entirely). As soon as they get active they stop putting on as much weight - they just use a lot of calories moving around.
proud but exhausted working mammy to two high needs babies

    • my surprise baby: the one and only D-Man born 3 weeks late (5/5/08) at 9 lbs 14 oz and 21.5 inches, and
    • the shock H-Girl born about a week late (10/7/09) at 8lbs 15oz and 20.75 inches.

If I am here I am covered in baby (probably two) and fighting for control of the keyboard.

    Family beds are awesome

Wondering if you have PPD? Take the screening and see your doctor. You deserve to feel better.

thank you so much that makes me feel better. I have an appointment with a GI Specialist at Childrens Hospital per peds request to evaluate him for failure to thrive. I hope they see that he growing fine.
He's not a picky eater so I'll try the olive oil. How much to 4oz jar of friuts or veggies?
