Default Upper lip tie? What say you?

(Posted on the Kelly Mom forums too, sorry if you see the double post)

I'm so upset that I didn't notice this till now... we had a HORRIBLE time the first month with latch issues, and I've recently been given the "you need to supplement" talk by the pediatrician because she hasn't doubled her birth weight yet. She's 7 months old, and is 13lbs 2oz. (She was born 7lbs 6oz)

What say you? Is this an upper lip tie? If it is, what should I do??

Looks like it. They told me yesterday my son has one and it looks just like that. My 8 year old daughter had the same thing and had it clipped recently. It caused a space between her two front teeth. Now you make me wonder if that is stopping a proper latch as well.. grr

My 4 month old daughter has this!!!! I was having soooooo many problems with breastfeeding; consulted x2 pediatricians, x2 midwifes and my ob. Ending up going to see a lactation specialist who diagnosed tongue tie. Went to a specialist who confirmed this and we went ahead and had it clipped (they insisted on putting her under - a bit traumatic). After the bf problems persisted. Since given up trying to bf and stopped expressing Now discovered lip tie myself (had never even heard of it!). Can't believe the pediatrician and pediatric surgeon missed this!!! Could have been clipped at the same time as the tongue and may have had a chance at bf. Angry, sad, disappointed....

Can anyone let me know if it is worth putting my little girl through another procedure to have this clipped? Are there any long term effects if we leave it?

I don't know about it's affect on breastfeeding but i know that later in life it can cause gum recession and that causes bone recession, thus loose teeth that require extraction. Clip it early, IMO.

oh yes honey that it is! DS3 had it too just like that. had it clipped and no more sore nips or vasopasms. AND ended "colic" right away! Can also cause a gap in adult teeth. Call your local LLL Leader and see if they have a recommendation for a dentist that will clip it for you. Feel free to PM me with any questions.

ETA: DS was not put under for the clip but he was 8 weeks when he had it done. It did bleed for a bit and they put a clotting agent on it to stop the bleeding but it was not a big deal.

I just wanted to thank you for posting those pics. DS looks JUST like this. I'll have to ask his dr about it.

Can I make a suggestion??? I would go around the doctor and find a dentist to see your LO's. Call your local LLL Leader and see if she has a name of a dentist that clips.

How interesting! My ds has that exact same thing! We had a very very hard get go and no one ever mentioned anything about it. Maybe I will ask the pediatric dentist when I take him in. I know that my mom has talked about me having that has a child, but that I cut it on my own falling on the window sill around age 2.

I didn't think about this, but yes, it can be done at the dentist office. In our office, we cut adults with an laser. It doesn't bleed much if at all.

DS had his done at a dentist office...both upper lip and tongue. Was not a big deal.
