Default How long do I keep taking the herbs?

I started taking Alfalfa and Fenugreek because of my low milk supply. Last week I noticed my breasts were full of milk at all times, not just in the morning like before. I stopped taking the herbs and my breasts were full of milk for more than a week. Today I noticed my left breast didnt fill up like it ususally did (usually after an hour of feeding my lo my breasts fill up again). I dont know if Im supposed to be taking the herbs until I no longer breastfeed or if today was a prob because I didnt drink as much water as I usually do. What should I do?

some mothers continue to take herbal supplements the entire time they are breastfeeding...others find that they are able to maintain their increased supply after stopping. personally, i take a couple weeks off between taking fenugreek...though i haven't read anywhere that you have to give your body a "break" from fenugreek.

if you feel like your milk supply has decreased again, i'd suggest taking fenugreek again...i can't say much about alfalfa since i never took that.

Are you working with a lactation consultant? A local IBCLC would be a good resource to answer questions about herbs.
Only LLL leaders speak for La Leche League. LLL leaders are not medical professionals, and therefore cannot give advice regarding medications or suppliments. Talk to your healthcare provider.

My Lactation Consultants dont know much. I was in a lot of pain my first week and rather than show me how to latch the baby correctly, they said that was normal. I lost all trust with them after that. I asked a lot of questions that were not answered by them, which is how I found this website.
Anyway, I'll continue taking them. It cant hurt.

I'm so sorry your LC wasn't able to help you with your latch/soreness problems. LLL leaders are definitely a good resource for that kind of information. I'm glad you have found support and encouragement on these boards.

I did find some resources for you about herbs for increasing milk production:
