    Default Thrush and Genetian Violet

    Hi

I am looking for help from those who've tried Genetian Violet for their infant. The doc gave me 1% genetian violet in aqueous form and told me to treat her 2x/day for max 3 days. I treated her 2 days and there really wasn't any improvement so i stopped it (she throws up when i apply the medicine and the toxic sign just made me very uncomfortable). I am desperate to beat this thing and am curious if you've had success how many days did it take? Can anyone provide some guidence?

    Thanks

hi, there...my dd and i battled through thrush too...in fact, i just got done taking my diflucan and i'm still applying nystatin on her tongue....and i'm still using the all purpose nipple cream (apno). our pedi didn't prescribe the genetian violet...though i've read a bit about it and i've never read about it being given to the baby...i've always read about nursing mothers applying it to their breasts. hopefully someone one their will chime in with their experience.

maybe the toxic sign is a warning if you give your dd too much of it?! i'd be wary of it, too. you could also contact your local LLL or your hospital's lactation specialist...they should be able to help you out. i got a lot of good advice/help from the lactation specialists in the hospital that i gave birth in.

i hope your dd gets better soon! keep up the good work, mama!

Usually they put the violet on the nipple and have the baby nurse so she gets it in her mouth but since i don't nurse i was told to just paint it in her mouth. Its not too messy but since the doc said 3 days max and the toxic sign, i just didn't want to keep giving it as it wasn't doing a heck of a lot.

well, if you don't feel like it's working, then maybe you should stop and consult your pediatrician for another method of getting rid of your baby's thrush.

I had thrush as well and I was advised by my LC and pediatrician to use Nystatin for ds and Newman's ointment for me over the Gentian Violet. I didn't use the Gentian Violet because I heard that it was quite messy and that there are other remedies that work better. I started ds on Nystatin and w/in five days the thrush was gone. I used the Newman's ointment for about 2 weeks because I wanted to make sure that it didn't come back! I can totally sympathize because I battled thrush for almost 2 months. You may want to consult your pediatrician about other remedies, like Nystatin. I had to call my OB to get the prescription for the ointment.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

if you do get a prescription for the all purpose nipple ointment, you have to ensure that you have it made at a compounding pharamacy. see the following:
    http://www.kellymom.com/newman/03b-t...asts.html#apno

Any pharmacist should be able to make up this ointment, but not all want to. Not all pharmacies carry all the ingredients. If you are having difficulties, ask the pharmacist for the nearest compounding pharmacy.

the majority of my dd's thrush on her tongue is gone, but i'm still applying nystatin on her tongue at lesat twice a day...and i'm also still applying the ointment on my nipples!

Thank you for including that information. I completely forgot that I had to go to a certain pharamacy to get the ointment.

    Thanks .

I went to the dr with my first with thrush. They swabbed her mouth with gentian violet, sent the bottle home with me and told me to use as necessary!! I had no clue and used it about 4 times over the coarse of a couple weeks...the thrush didn't go away until I went to a different doctor and got nystatin cream for my nipples and they prescribed some sort of meds for dd, but I don't remember what they were. I'd go for something different...the violet didn't work for us at all!!

I already went through 10 days of Nystatin for dd and that didn't work. I didn't treat myself for anything as the bottle is fed breastmilk using a bottle (exclusiver pumper). I don't have any symptoms of yeast either.

DD's roof of the mouth is slightly white looking, is that yeast as well? She definitely has it on her tongue, nothing on her cheeks or lips but the roof of the mouth is whitish. Is that how it looks normally or is that yeast?

do you sterilize your pump parts after pumping? if not, you really should! also, even though you are not showing signs of thrush, i would recommend against freezing your milk, as freezing does not kill the yeast. you should use the pumped milk as soon as you can. when dd and i were being treated for thrush, i pumped at work 3 times and used that milk for the next day...and i threw away about 30 4-5oz bottles of frozen milk because i had frozen the milk while i had thrush.

there is infant diflucan...i'm not sure if anyone has had to give that to their LO....maybe you can ask your pedi about that since the genetian violet isn't working either.
