    Default choking

My 10 month old has been self feeding for months on soft cooked or steamed fruits and veggies and lately peices of toast but this week, he shoves his mouth full and chokes. He is not taking bites anymore, he thinks the whole strip goes in the mouth. Also, he loves rice chex but instead of gumming them as usual he swallows whole and chokes. He really scared me today. What is going on? He did the same with a broccoli floret. Instead of taking bites and using the little stem to hold he put it all in his mouth.

I found that I needed to help teach my LO how to eat by demonstrating myself the way to take bites and chew.

My DS does this as well. I've just started to cut his food up into very small pieces and give him a little bit at a time so that even if he puts everything that's in front of him into his mouth, it's still not much. He's choked a few times, it's so scary.

What I do is just put less on the tray. May not be the best thing to do, but it scares me too when he stuffs his mouth too full. So I just don't give him as much to stuff in there.

I would say cut things up for him...I cut everything up for DD into small pieces and make sure it is cooked soft.

I gave him banana this morning and cut it up small instead of in strips. Much better! He was upset thpough that it was harder to pick up. Still, no choking and he is still in charge of the amount he eats. I just didn't want to feed him myself because i'm loving the baby led solids.

have you checked out a baby cpr or 1st aid class.
that might be helpful then you'll know what to do if he gets into trouble.

I do know CPR and first aid but I still panic and just hope not to ever need it. He had asparagus tonight and I usually give him a spear so he canm hold on to it and he did well before but tonight I choped it up and gave him a few peices at a time and no problem.
