Default Intro solids, ebf and now a tad constipated?

My son will be 6 months on the 6th. We went ahead and started solids about two weeks ago, mostly purees. But on Saturday I went ahead and gave him a banana and he ate it like a pro. But, he is now constipated. We EBF and he eats at lest 8 times a day, so I am wondering is this completely normal? he was screaming because it hurt to poo, so I am wondering what I can do to ease the pain on that? He has been eating normally, every 2 hours, we only feeds solids in the evening and he actually hasnt had anything between Sat. and yesterday, when he had some prunes because I was concerned about his bowl movements. His wet count has been normal.

    Thanks much ladies!

Bananas are a super duper constipating food!

In addition to prunes you can give baby pear to eat.

If still constipated sometimes a little stimulation using a thermometer can help. They also make suppositories for babies.

I shoulda have known it, not a FTM. HE loved the banana, but poor thing hurts. I am giving him prunes and will try some pears later. Thanks much!

    Hope you get him un-plugged!

It may also help to have baby in a warm bath and massage his belly.

Sounds gross - but if you need to getting some latex gloves, putting some vaseline on your pinky, and using your finger to help un-plug baby works.

    with pp.

FWIW when my DS gets backed up we feed him some prunes too and it usually takes a full 24 hours for the prunes to work their magic. Be READY when they do

Good luck mama. Hope baby finds some relief soon!

M poor little guy got really stopped up after only a TEENY amount of banana. No more bananas for him!

We're going to get some pear juice to use in the future if needed.

And yes, I did need to do the gloved finger with vaseline in baby's tushie to help him out. He was not very happy with me but it got the blockage out. Quite a way to start the day. TMI?

Also - don't be alarmed if you see some red blood. A constipated baby will probably end up with a small anal fissure / tear when getting that poop out.

YAY! LOL Definetly watch the bananas... I think tonight I am going to cook up a pear and let him have at it, hoping it will help deconstipate him. I will try the finger up that way, though I know that it wont be comfortable.

on the one or two occasions DS has had diarrhea, i've given him bananas to firm it up a bit. blueberries can also have this effect, just so you know.

My son did the same thing when he started purees, mainly b/c all he wanted were starchy things like bananas and sweet potatoes

Now I can get him to eat apples, peaches, nectarines, plums (which are undried prunes, I didn't know @ the time), peas. This has helped. I also used to give him about an ounce of 100% apple juice w/ 3oz of water a day (usually would only take 1/2). I don't have to do that anymore except when I notice his poo getting really firm.
