Default The size of a newborn's stomach days 1-10

This is a great article with a chart showing the size of a newborn's tummy days 1-10. This is why colostrum, minimal though it is, is the perfect food for a newborn. (in addition to the great immunological benefits and laxative effect to clear out meconium, etc,)

Day 1 it is the size of a shooter marble and does NOT stretch. Feeding more than this this amount causes spit up.

Day 3 it is the size of a ping pong ball.

Day 10 it is the size of an extra large chicken egg

    adult - softball size

The hospital gave me a handout like this when I had DD. Although they used a chickpea for reference rather than a marble.

It really helped ease both my mind and DH's mind in those early days.

Great link Beth! So important for new moms to see and understand when they feel like their LO is constantly attached to the breast. With a tummy that small that is filled so easily by breastmilk (digested quickly), they need to eat often. Great job.

I have read this before but really like the chart visual.

and yeah all hospitals should hand this out. My BF friendly one didn't.

Great info!!! The LC who taught our BF class told us this but I think that having the actual sizes illustrated makes it easier to understand.

I didn't get this with my first son, but I got it with my second son and it really put my mind at ease. It really puts everything into perspective. Thanks for the link!

Yes, the visual is great, isn't it? Our health department puts something like this out on a fridge magnet. I have it up on my fridge. It also has the number of wets, poopies, goal of 8-12 nursing sessions/day and the WHO recommendations. It really helped in the early days and totally bugged out my mom and MIL with the WHO guidelines (both of whom FF their babies and were like 2 years - whaaat?).

Good thing to show my parents when they think baby isn't getting enough. I can't believe how much the stomach grows in the first days! This should be made a sticky or something where it can be easily accessed.
