    Default White Puffy Scab/Skin

Ok, so i'm not a mom but a very very loving husband looking for relief for my dear wife - here is the story and the deal - when she first started to feed the latch was very wrong and she got very very sore on 1 breast. after 2 sessions with a Lactation consoltant she felt better BUT was suggested to pump and give the breats a break while still feeding the baby breast milk - OK now she has developed sore nipples (no breast pain) and they look like white soft scabs, not your usual scab. She is sore and they hurt. Please any help would be appreciated

Oh, ouch! I'm so sorry your wife is having these troubles. Nipple pain is the worst!

The white soft scabs are on both nipples, not just the one that originally was very sore?

Can you describe the timeline for these events? When was your baby born, when did your wife see the lactation consultant, when did she stop nursing and start pumping, and when did this new problem start?

My not-well-informed guess at this point would be that your wife has either a yeast infection or a bacterial infection. Either of these things can occur on the nipple, and they require quite different treatments. I recommend that you go back to the lactation consultant (or to another one who has the IBCLC credential -- don't take a case like this to someone who doesn't have the highest credential in lactation). She should have a copy of _The Breastfeeding Atlas_, which has lots of pictures of all sorts of conditions that happen in nursing mothers. With an IBCLC's help, you can get a better idea of what is happening and how to remedy it.

Good luck; keep us posted and don't hesitate to post here again with any questions or concerns. I hope your wife is feeling much better very soon, and that she can soon nurse your baby again.

When I had scabs on my nipples, they were white, too. I think it's because they are always moist, and not much blood actually comes to the surface. And what blood did come to the surface got sucked away. I wouldn't worry about the color, but cracked nipples are the worst!

Here is some information on it for you:

    http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...lehealing.html

What eventually worked for me was to go shirtless and braless, and let my nipples air out. It still took about 2 or 3 weeks from when the nipple first cracked to when it finally healed. Be ready for a lot of screaming and crying during nursing sessions until it heals... it's one of the most painful things a woman can endure.

Tell your wife she's doing a great job, and to hang in there!!

Baby Born 7 pm -9/14 first attempt to Breast feed
9/15 – 9/17 breast feeding but with some amount of pain
9/18 – First visit to lactation specialist in Orem Utah – by this point pain has already set in and sore are starting to show. She has been using lanisoa ointment.
9/19 all ok but still painful – LS recommended Newman’s ointment (with prescription to prevent yeast infection) we got it and is using it also.
9/21 another visit to a lactation specialist, for more help on latching, baby was falling asleep and we were not sure if she was getting enough to eat. Thinks are better but she is very very sore on her nipples. Some pumping about ½ & Half
9/22 moved to 100% pumping to help her breasts heal, is using a medila pump, and is pumping about 6-8 times per day. Sores are starting to turn white and scab like with painful nipples,
9/23 & 9/24 still painful and scab like are getting bigger on the more painful nipple.
9/25 ok, still using ointment but no major improvements
9/26 I checked my baby for thrush, I see whitish on the roof of the mouth but no blisters or anything on any other part of the mouth, Baby is sleeping well and eating well, but then again has been breast milk fed by bottle for over a week. Now after finding this god sent website we read a post somewhat like what she had that suggested warm compress before pumping/feeding and the scabs started to come – off very easily almost looked like dried up milk, but it was soft like skin tissue. Also I found another post that talked about painful pumping, my wife had been pumping at full power, so she went all the way down and up 2 clicks, she said that was much better and less painful. She is also going to try a lavender (Purple) ointment that was recommended by the LS. I will post any updates.

Sounds like things are healing up maybe. i agree with the past post, going topless helped me heal the most. Also squeezing the colostrum on my breast. It is very healing. Great job Mom and Dad!
