    Default pain in breast

For the past day or so my nipple on one side has been really sore, and now today that breast has been sore. There is also an area that feels hard on one side of it from the outside all the way into the areola. Is this a clogged duct? How do I know when pain is a sign of something bad or just a normal thing to deal with? THanks, kristen

I had a clogged duct when LO was two months old and that's what it sounds like... if it starts getting "hot" definatly get in to see a LC. I was told to use warm compresses.

I don't know how to distinguish between bad and normal. I panic over everything!

Kristen, this sounds like it could be either a clogged duct or the onset of mastitis (or perhaps both, as one can cause the other).

I like this kellymom.com link that discusses both issues:

    http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/mastitis.html

It's not a LLL resource, but is reliable for breastfeeding information.

Read the link, but in short -- nurse nurse nurse, moist warm heat, and if you develop a fever or the breast gets hot/red/intensely painful, see your doctor right away.

Hope this passes quickly! Keep us posted.
