Default "you should wean at 2 yrs"

dh seems to think that 2 yrs is the age when i should wean lila. not sure where he's getting this info (i think his side of the family is in his ear about it after the holidays/seeing dd nursing frequently still).

my Q is, what links/sources/info do you mamas use when backing up nursing beyond 2? i know that the WHO recommends 3 years now (right?), but any good links to articles or whatevs would be appreciated here. i sort of sense that we're going to have it out about this sooner or later, much to my dismay...

    many thanks!

When to Wean- discusses natural- as opposed to cultural- norms for weaning
American Academy of Pediatrics policy statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk- note #10: "Pediatricians and parents should be aware that exclusive breastfeeding is sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months of life... and provides continuing protection against diarrhea and respiratory tract infection....Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child....Increased duration of breastfeeding confers significant health and developmental benefits for the child and the mother, especially in delaying return of fertility (thereby promoting optimal intervals between births)....There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer."

What happend for us is that DH changed his mind about nursing gradually over time so be patient and keep educating him. The closer we get to each birthday the more he realizes that DS2 loves nursing, that it isn't harming him, that he's healthier than all his co-workers children, that he's more developed than his co-workers children and so now my DH who wasn't sure that he was comfortable with bfing in the first place (he'd never had any exposure to it) is a total lactivist and co-sleeping advocate to anyone who will give him their ear. I have nursed a collective 66 months and counting. DS1 for 3 years 7 months and now DS2 for 25 months!
