Default How long to regain weight?

So he likes to be at the breast but he is so sleepy. The hospital has me in a panic saying he has lost more than 10% of his birth weight and his jaundice is bad.

    I need encouragement.

My milk is starting to come in but it's just trickles. He falls asleep after a minute or two at the breast.

Think once my milk comes in good we might have better luck?

    Ideas are appreciated.

He is 3 days old and hasn't gained anything yet and is only losing weight.

DS1 was a sleepy baby with jaundice. I needed to be SUPER aggressive (in a nice way) to wake him up and keep him awake during a feeding.

Are you still at the hospy? Can you get baby under bili-lights?

DS1 they brought a bili-light thingy into our room. There was a pad he lay on that I picked up with him to nurse so he'd keep getting the bili-light exposure. He was on bili-lights for about 14 hours, then levels were low enough to be clear of jaundice worry and went home.

Also - jaundice waste products are pooped out. So super important to nurse OFTEN to get fluids into baby and start pooping out the waste. I think they had me nursing like every 60 to 90 minutes.

he will start to gain in the next few days I bet. Milk comes in mire gradually a lot of times with second babies. It may take two weeks to get up to birth weight. Nurse all the time. Lots f skin to skin.

Do you have a sunny window you can put him in front of or a biliblanket to help with the jaundice?

Try doing breast compressions while nursing

Have you tried breast compressions when he starts to slow down? Is his latch/suck good? Could you try pumping in between to get things moving a bit quicker? The added stimulation could help and if they start saying he needs to be topped up it can be with your own milk.

Read other posts and saw that you're home.

Wake up that baby! The more he nurses the faster he'll be able to flush out the jaundice.

Strip to just diaper, do diaper changes, tickle feet, tickle behind his ear.

Can you get a bili-blanket at home? Faster way to kick the jaundice than just sunlight.

How about letting DS1 nurse so your milk comes in faster?

you can encourage your milk by pumping too.

You and baby will be fine. Billi-lights or lots of sun will help too.

Try talking to your pedi about it. I have a wonderful relationship with ours and she was great about saying things were fine when the hospy nurses started to try and panic me. I asked for advice before H was born about what to do if I ended up with one of those L&D nurses. She said it was really important to always say you need to speak to a Dr if the nurses start pressuring you about things. I asked because with DS the nurses pressured me into one 2oz formula feeding because he was so big and so bruised and they were concerned about billi levels. I never managed to build a supply and I don't know how much of it was that.

If I am here I am covered in baby (probably two) and fighting for control of the keyboard.

    Family beds are awesome

Wondering if you have PPD? Take the screening and see your doctor. You deserve to feel better.

He's only 2 days old too I forgot to say.

His wets and dirties are great, lots of them.

Poops are still green and haven't transitioned.

I am hoping tomorrow my milk will come in really good, I don't want to pump and end up w/ a huge O/S like with Logan. It was a disaster.

Logan is nursing, it did help. I will let him nurse again tonight.

OH and I think the tiredness is in addition to the jaundice his circ. He had a really rough time and some clotting issues and had some meds from that as well. It was very traumatic and he bled a lot, yesterday was pretty much a wash nursing him all he wanted to do was sleep.

There is SOME improvement today though.

    Plugging away at it though!
