Thread: Fridge to Freezer?

  1. #1

    Default Fridge to Freezer?

I've searched the pages of LLLI for the answer but didn't see it...can you move breastmilk from the fridge to the freezer?

For example, I have a pumped bottle of milk that has been in the fridge for 7 days (I've been off work since last week). In attempt to save it, can I freeze it now, or must you strictly put milk straight into the freezer right away if you're going to freeze it?

You'd think I'd know the answer to this question after 6 months of BF

You can put milk from fridge to freezer. In fact some books even reccommend cooling the milk in the fridge before freezing. However, since 7 days is at the long end of the "shelf life" (sorry couldn't think of a better way to say it) I'd check to make sure it is still good before you freeze it.

Ok I was about to post this same question, except the milk I have is 9 days old. How do you check to make sure it's still "good"?

Here are the LLLI milk storage guidelines. Up to 8 days is acceptable. It's usually easy to tell if milk has gone bad because it starts to smell pretty bad.

Smell it, and taste it if you're not sure. You'll be able to tell!
