Default small amount of expressed milk

    Hi,
I am bf my 4 mo son, he eats every 4 hours. I have started pumping after his 8am feed, maybe around 8:30am... just to have extra milk in case.
This am, I only got 1/2 oz from left breast. He only fed from the right so I expected to get at least 2 oz from the other side.
Is this normal? I am using the Medela Swing pump and have been pumping on and off since he was born (4 months).
Usually I get a few oz when pumping...

    Thanks

Have you tried nursing and pumping at the same time? This may help increase your output.

I know how hard it is! Is the Swing just a single pump?

I know it's hard, but you could probably mazimize your output if you pumped and nursed at the same time, since you only have a single pump. I had to do the same thing when I had a single as well. I would try and do this at the same time everyday as well.

Definitely, if you do it at the same time every day it will help, especially if you keep pumping for about 5 minutes or so after the milk stops flowing (to tell your body to produce more). I never could get the hang of nursing & pumping, it was just too awkward. If you want to have some extra milk, I would suggest putting a pumping session in during the morning (when your supply is the greatest) between your DS's feedings. One more thought - a friend of mine with a single pump manually expresses (sort of) on the other side while she pumps, she says that the extra stimulation helps her pumping letdown.
