Thread: OALD and OS-going crazy!

  1. #1

    Default OALD and OS-going crazy!

DS is almost 7 weeks old, have been exclusively BFing since birth. I pump in the morning so that DH can feed him for me once in the evening so I can get some kind of sleep! I've had forceful let down issues since he was born, and lately in the evenings he will latch on well for 10 mins or so, then push himself away with his fists and cry/pull my nipple. He'll chew his hands and root like crazy, but cry and push away at the nipple when I put him back on.

He's normally a very calm, alert, smiley baby but this just started in the last few days. I thought my supply had leveled out but I guess I was wrong!

I always hand express my milk when it lets down, and I block feed all day long, plus his head is always elevated and I use gripe water and he's on zantac for acid reflux. What else can I do?!?! I am SO FRUSTRATED and I do not want to give him any formula at all ever! It breaks my heart when he cries at the breast because I just want to be able to feed him without choking him! I should mention that he used to throw up after feedings occasionally but has since stopped, plus I burp him frequently during and after a feeding. His diapers are still seedy and yellow, plus he's gained almost 4 lbs since birth. I've seen a lactation specialist 3 times-by now we're becoming friends, haha. What else should I do? TIA!

It sounds to me like you are doing everything right mama
At 6-8 weeks pp your supply can start to even out. This can be frustrating for a baby who has gotten used to a fast letdown. My son did this too. I would let him off until he calmed down, and try again 10 minutes later. Sometimes he would latch right on then and sometimes not. It will get better mama, you just gotta ride it out and feed on demand. Are his pee diapers good?

Could it be something that you are eating at night before you bf that could be flaring up his reflux or giving him gas caffeine, chocolate, acidic foods/drinks, etc? Anything new you started drinking/eating?

His pee diapers are good and I don't think I'm eating/drinking anything different...I was drinking decaf coffee a couple weeks ago but have since stopped. I eat pretty much the same stuff I have since I started BFing...<sigh>

Hmmm What flow is the bottle that your dh gives him? He might like that flow (especially if it's fast), or he may be getting frustrated that he's just trying to suck for comfort and milk is actually coming out

we use Born Free stage 1 bottles, so they're slow flow. You might be onto something with the comfort sucking because he does do it at the end of a feeding. I don't know. He does this only in the evenings, though, and he is not a big crier. He only usually cries when he's hungry or naked and we can always soothe him pretty quickly. But when he does this, he just freaks out on the breast and I have to sit him up and he calms down until he starts acting hungry again. I'm at my end. I just don't know what to do and I feel like I've tried EVERYTHING. I do not want to stop BFing in the evenings, but sometimes it just gets so overwhelming.

Sounds like he might be going through a growth spurt or a developmental milestone that he's working on (rolling over ) and needs/wants that comfort. I think he just doesn't like that milk keeps coming out because he wants the nipple as a pacifier That's just my 2-cents.

Thanks everyone for all your support/advice! Things are still pretty bad and now he's reverting to falling asleep at the breast during the day and in the middle of the night (NO fun!) I'm going to speak with another lactation specialist to see if there's anything else I can do, and I'm seeing his Dr on Friday for an unrelated problem but I'll ask her as well. Thanks everyone! At least it's nice to know that others have gone through the same thing and survived!
