Default 18-month has heart murmer is it my fault from caffeine?

    Hi,

My DD had her 18-month checkup last night and everything was excellent except for the doctor heard a slight heart murmur. Since she's been nursing mostly at nap and sleep times lately, I've been allowing myself 1 Red Bull per day (I know I know...) for the past month or so. I stayed clear of caffeine all through my pregnancy and up to this past month or two. I'm wondering if my caffeine intake (Red Bull has less caffeine than one cup of regular coffee) has gone through my breast milk to effect her? That's the only thing that's changed from all her perfect checkups prior.
I asked the pediatrician and he said that that wouldn't effect her, but I'm still not convinced b/c I had read that caffeine did go directly into the milk.

I would appreciate any advice you can give and I even welcome criticism at this point!

Trying to edit to correct spelling in subject. s/b murmur... oh well.

Mama, I don't think you should blame yourself. Heart murmurs are common, and as far as I know are not linked to mom's caffeine consumption. And even if it was linked, you'd probably have to drink a lot more than 1 Red Bull a day to have a noticeable effect. Lots of moms drink coffee and tea and eat chocolate and have kids without murmurs.

But if you're worried, cut out the Red Bull.

I can't imagine that it would cause a heart murmur. That doesn't really make any sense to me. I have caffeine every day and nurse my daughter anywhere from 6 to 10 times a day, and have since she was born. If it has the same amount as a regular cup of coffee or less, I don't see how that could have done anything.

Don't beat yourself up. It's not your fault

    Thank you ladies!

She still does nurse at least 6 times per day, I would say. She nurses about 3 times (or throughout) her nap and nurses 4+ times at night. Last night I think it had to be 10 times! I mentioned weaning at the ped's office last night and he said, "why? it's so good for her." So I guess I don't have to worry about that for now!

The only reason I thought of the red bull is because it makes my heart race. I guess maybe that isn't a good thing? I wish they made caffeine free!

Thank you, yes, Dr. Chi (in Hackettstown, NJ) is AWESOME. That's why we travel an hour to see him (we live in PA) and pay out of pocket.

Heart murmurs are super-common in kids. A heart murmur is where, for some reason, "turbulence" is heard originating in the heart. Most of the time, it's from blood going the "wrong way" in a valve area because the valve flaps are a little "leaky." Nothing to do with how fast the heart beats. Most of the time, they are outgrown, particularly if the child was not born with it.

My first child had a murmur, IIRC, around 18-24 months and then at his 3 year old check up, it was gone. I don't drink anything caffienated, other than the occasional soda, and eat some chocolate once in a while.

DS1 had heart murmur at birth and was gone by next day. I've read that they are common and kids grow out of them.

*I* wouldn't drink a Red Bull though. (That's just me) Not b/c of the caffeine but b/c of all the other stuff that's in there. Google some of the ingredients and see with you think though.

Just wanted to back the other mama's--I'm pretty sure it's not from the Red Bull.
Liam (ds1) had a slight murmur at his 18mo check up. The doctor said he was pretty sure it was "innocent", but he had Liam sent the cardiologist anyway just to check it out (this doctor has sent us to SO many specialists, it's insane. At least he's thorough....), and the cardiologist was confused as to why he had sent him in. He said that almost all kids have a murmur at some point, and most of the time they're outgrown. It was gone by his 2 year check up.
I'm sure it's nothing to worry about!

A lot more, I'm sure! But it can never hurt you to let go of caffeine.
