    Question cranberry pills

Is is safe to take cranberry pills to help prevent UTIs while breastfeeding? I took them before I had my ds and stopped while I was pregnant. The bottle said to consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding. I dont think it would be a problem but I was wondering what you guys think.
    Thank you,
    Anne

i've read on a couple of websites that it is safe to take if you're pregnant or breastfeeding (see links below), but it's best to get your doctor's advice.

i started taking them while i was pregnant and am still taking them while DS is breastfeeding. my midwife suggested it since i am prone to UTI's. Better than drinking the bitter unsweetened juice all the time.

    HTH.
All over the world there exists in every society a small group of women who feel themselves strongly attracted to giving care to other women during pregnancy and childbirth. Failure to make use of this group of highly motivated people is regrettable and a sin against the principle of subsidiary. ~ Dr. Kloosterman, Chief of OB/GYN, Univ. of Amsterdam, Holland

The other good thing about cranberry pills vs drinking lots and lots of cran juice while pregnant is that cranberry juice is very high in vitamin C. That's a good thing in general, but if you have an unusually high amount of vit c in your body for prolonged periods while you are pregnant, baby can develop scurvy after birth... got this info from my gen med practitioner when I was first pregnant because I routinely took 500 - 1000mg of vit c per day before pregnancy....and stopped!

It's a disease that results from a lack of vitamin C. It's much more rare now than it used to be. Once upon a time, it was somewhat common for sailors (we're talking long time ago) out on LONG ocean voyages to get scury from lack of available fruits and veges that contain vitamin C.

I think the issue here would be that baby en utero would have been exposed to tons and tons of vitamin c thru me if I kept on taking 1g per day and then would have basically gotten used to that and once born, not having that anymore, the body would have gone into total deprivation....and shown scurvy symptoms as a result. I didn't dig for case studies on this....I took my doc's input at her word on that one!

Interesting info about being pregnant and cranberry pills. I have a nasty time with UTIs and kidney infections... Cranberry pills were one of my only reliefs during the pregnancy. I took them all 9 months in the extra high dosage form and stopped after I had DS. I do not see a sign of scurvy nor was my doc concerned about it... In fact he was happy cause high vitamin C was all that kept my immune system running well during the cold season.

He also said that I could keep it up when nursing as well. But maybe for me the benefits outweigh the risks... Anyways... THANK GOODNESS FOR CRANBERRY IN PILL FORM!!!!!!!!!!!
