    Default Baby Poop ?

Ok, my DD is 11 months old, today actually, and she is exclusivly breastfed. We had a GI appt. this morning and he was freaked out that she only poos once every 5 days or so and he said that was fine for younger babies, but at 11 months she should be doing it once a day or at least every other day. He perscribed a stool softner for her (which her stool is not hard at all) for me to give to her once a day. Anyone else breastfeed exclusivly for this long (without any solids or anything else) that could shed some light on this would be great. I don't want to give her anything that is not needed just because a doctor doesn't know about breastfed older babies. Thanks.

I don't have a comment about the poop, but are you really not giving your baby anything other than breastmilk at 11 months?? Surely they should be on solids from 6 months at the latest. I have never seen anything that advocated not introducing solids for this long and I am finding it a bit worrying. Other people may have more information about this, but I have never heard of anyone that advocates this.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but I am a bit worried.

Actually it is entirely acceptable to exclusively b/f and infant for the first year of life. There is much research and info out there to support exclusively b/f for 12 months before introducing solids. I don't have the links b/c I am not so technically inclined there are other threads here to support this. Solids can be offered but they are more for experimentation.

Here's a post on solids from kellymom. All I know on the poop situation is that exclusively BF babies can go up to 7 days without one because there's hardly anything left that's not broken down. I'll have to keep searching for that one but I do know that's what I read.

???? Have you even LOOKed at the board dedicated to introducing solids??? 6months is the EARLIEST you should BEGIN to INTRODUCE solids to a BFed baby!!!
Marcie, it would seem that everything that applies to EBF babies would still apply...Did you tell that she's still EBF or was there an assumption around solids?

Apologies. Its just I have never heard of this. All the health bodies I know of talk about weaning at around 6 months, or 6-9 months. None of them seem to advocate it any later, and I couldn't find any research on it either.

this link might be helpful to you...
    http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/so...html#nutrition

it states "Some babies thrive on breastmilk alone until 12 months or later - as long as your baby is continuing to gain weight and grow as he should, your milk is meeting his needs well."

i think you're fine without the stool softener as long as your dd is gaining weight well and has plenty of wet diapers...and she is not constipated (which it doesn't sound like she is)...and as shannon said, exclusively breastfed babies can go up to 7 days without pooping. my dd is only 4 months old, and she only poops once a week (twice if we're lucky! )

Thanks for the info - you learn something new every day.

Funnily enough I have just remembered some work on baby led weaning which misses out the pureed stage of feeding and goes straight to proper solids when the baby starts showing an interest in it. i suppose this would naturally mean later weaning.

I probably found it odd because I sometimes felt I was weaning late because I did wait until just after 6 months and mothers around me were doing it at 4 months (the uk guidelines were 4-6 months at the time - they hadnt quite adopted the WHO 6 months guidelines yet).

Sorry again if I went overboard with my initial reaction, having rwad a bit more I can see now it was an overreaction.

Thanks for the replies.....I thought the same about her poops, she just on breastmilk (which I told him, I love that funny look I get from doctors when I tell them that) and he still said she needed something to make her poop more. I contacted my LLL Leader, I love her so much, and she said she didn't see a problem with it due to she eats like a newborn so she should poop like a newborn, makes sense to me....

Let me give a little (short) history why Madeline is not on foods yet:
    1st, born premature
    2nd, sever reflux
3rd, surgery to correct reflux (didn't work), she's had such a horriable experiance eating, she doesn't want anything else but boobie
4th, she has a actual food adversion (diag. by her occupational thearpist) and she has also has Sensory Intergation Dysfunction (SID) which makes her not like textures and certian other things.

At 4 month when we were told to start cereals with her, she refused them, at 6 months when we tried with purreed foods, she refused them, so on and so forth....I'm not going to force her to eat, she's already had a bad experiance with it, I don't want to make it worse. BTW, she's 11 months old, 18lbs 7 oz (today at her Pedi GI & Pulmoligist offices). She's been the same weight since May, she's on the platau....no big deal....

Thanks again for all the responses, I think I was looking for reassurace of what I have been doing is fine and not worring about the poos....
