The advice you were given would be good advice if you were having problems maintaining supply- but you're not. It sounds like you're actually having the opposite problem (i.e. too much milk), in which case the last thing you should be doing is pumping. Supply = demand, so every time you empty the breast, you're telling your body to make the same excess amount.
My daughter won't eat off of both breasts during a feeding and I've been told to pump the "off" breast after she is done with the other.
As long as your baby is gaining weight and has adequate diaper output, I think you should put away the pump and allow your baby to nurse from 1 breast, offering the second breast when she is done with the first but not stressing if she doesn't take it.
