Default Blood in 3 month old stool and also often green

I am new to this forum. My son is three months old and has had green poop on and off for the last 6 weeks. I was told it could be a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance so I was told to nurse on one side for two feeds and then move to the other side (I was already doing the one breast per feed). The stools got a bit yellower but are still somewhat green. It is also sometimes mucousy and not seedy. I was told not to worry too much about it, as he is peeing/pooping regularly and is gaining weight (13lbs 5oz). Two weeks ago, I got some blood in his stools for just one diaper and then it went away so did not think much of it. Yesterday and today, there is specks of blood mixed in the stool everytime he poops. I was thinking dairy intolerance but I was also told it could be because I have had a cracked nipple for the past four days and he could be getting blood when he drinks the milk. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this. I tried to go to the emergency yesterday but after a 6 hour wait and still many people ahead of me, I gave up and came back home. I don't really look forward to going back to the emerg and am wondering if anyone has information on this. Thanks

My daughter had the green mucousy stools with blood on them sometimes and it was due to oversupply/foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. My pediatrician told me not to worry about hte blood, which I thought was weird. Even now at 8 months sometimes she has green mucousy stools. I just finally stopped worrying about it.

Also, if your nipple is bleeding, that is probably the source of blood in your son's stool. The lactation consultant told me about that at the hospital.

I went to the emergency yesterday to get answers, as I wanted to know what could be causing it and the blood was now in every diaper for about four days in a row and the stool is back to being green.

After checking the diapers I brought with me, the doctor told me that my son is eating too much. That does not make much sense, as he is in the 50% percentile and has always been. He also only drinks for 5 to 10 minutes per feed every 2 to 3 hours. She told me to feed him every two hours and not let him feed for long ( he already doesn't feed long so I don't know where she's going with this and did not explain he rationale). She also did not test the blood to see if it was mine or his.

Did anyone have infants that were sensitive to dairy products and had blood in their stool. I read that the blood shows up differently in the stool for the different issues that could cause it. I will be going to see my son's doctor when he gets back from vacation but would like to know if the blood from a sensitivity is a darker color or if it is red or pink. Mine shows up as pink mixed in the stool and just flecks of it.

It sounds like a milk protein allergy to me. DS's started at about 5wo. All my drs were like...hes fine....its ok...hes got a bug. Finally I had them refer me to a GI specialist and took all dairy out of my diet. (like even powdered milk ingredients-which are in alot of stuff-lots of label reading) His poops were very green, snotty(mucousy) and streaked with red blood. I think if it was your blood it would be darker coloured because LO would have partially digested it (but ive never had it so im totally guessing). After about a month of absolutely no dairy his poops got better, still some green but no snot and no blood. The GI specialist said green just means its going through them fast. I started adding tiny bits of milk to my diet when he was a little over 4mo, but only a little at a time and then I would watch for a couple days. Now I can have about a cup (250ml) a day and hes ok. I'm still taking calcium supplements though. I would try the dairy and if it gets worse or is causing lots of pain go to doc...and ask for a referral if necessary. Good luck

Here is a thread that may help. Check out the allergy forums here as well.

Although it would be so helpful, no one can tell you for sure if it is a milk allergy. You have to remove it from your diet to see. It can take up to 4-6 weeks for the blood to go away, and many babies that are milk intolerant/allergic are also soy intolerant.

They can do a scope to check and see if they have allergic colitis, but even if that comes back as positive (it is an invasive procedure), it will not tell you what the allergy is, just that there is an allergy at play.

Thanks for the info. I have a feeling that it is a dairy intolerance. I love dairy products and might be eating too much of it, which is causing some trouble for my LO. I am going dairy free as of today to see if it will make a difference.

My DD has milk protein allergy and once I eliminated milk from my diet the blood her her stool cleared right up. Her ped sent us to see a pediatric GI specialist and he agreed that milk was probably the culprit. DD is 11mo now and I can occasionally have small amounts of milk like maybe a serving of mac-n-cheese or a small milk shake but I still stay away from actual milk. We've done some trial and error things where when I have drank milk it affected her sleeping and she was super grumpy. Hope this helps

Momma - Dairy was our issue...
I was off dairy for a while and DH made me a smoothie w/milk one day...
I drank it and my poor son had blood in his diaper again...
So I knew what it was...let us know how it goes....could take up to 2 week before you see a difference....Good luck!
