Re: Pumping not helping!
Congratulations on your success with baby #4!
My fourth son is 5 months old and is still breastfeeding! YEA! But the doctor told me to start feeding him cereal and I was pumping just enough milk to mix with the cereal about 2 ounces.
Your doctor gave you some outdated advice about solids. According to my pediatrician, until the age of 1 year solids are just for experimenting with new tastes, textures, and motor skills. They are not nutritionally necessary, and many moms do not offer them until at least 6 months. The advice your doctor gave you is really best for a mom who wants to wean as quickly as possible, at or before the age of 1 year.
Breastmilk is the perfect food for babies. Solids do not offer nutrition that is as complete or as balanced as breastmilk. What solids can offer is vitamins and minerals that breastmilk has in adequate but not super-abundant levels. If you are concerned about your baby getting enough vitamins, you can give them via dropper instead of replacing nursing sessions with solids.
2 oz is totally normal pumping output for a mom with an established supply. When you were pumping your "emergency" stash it was probably in the early days of your breastfeeding career with this baby, right? A lot of moms have "extra" milk when they are just starting out.
When I was pumping to "stash" for emergencies, I was getting at least 4 ounces from each breast. Now, I am lucky if I can squeeze out 2 ounces.
Okay, this is why I think your doc's advice wasn't so hot. 4-5 nursing sessions per day is on the very low end, and I would probably want to aim for 6-8. (Again, breastmilk is the perfect food, so you want your baby to have as much of it as possible, right?)
My LO only eats maybe 4 or 5 times a day. His breakfast is cereal and breast, then if he gets hungry before lunch i feed him off both breast.
