Oh mama, this is a hard boat to be in. Not fun at all. Ryan went through about 6 - 10 nipples before we found one that he liked. He did the same thing - push it out of his mouth with his tongue. There was not putting it in there if he didn't want it. But once we found the one he liked, he took it like he had been drinking from it forever. Ryan finally took the Dr. Browns nipple. My next try was going to be the Breast Flow.

Once she starts taking the bottle, don't stop. Maybe have dh give her one on the weekends. Ryan took his bottle for 6 weeks, then when I went on spring break, I nursed him all week, then he refused again. He has rarely taken a bottle since then. What has worked the times that he has taken it was to put just a tiny bit of mashed banana on the tip of the nipple. He would suck that off, then continue sucking when he realized that there was good stuff inside. But, Ryan was much older than Lu. I think he was about 4.5 - 5 months at that point.

    Goodluck!!

Avent nipples didn't work. Medela, a no go. Dr. Browns next.

I'm working from home so it's not a huge deal, but if I have to go into the office...

    Thanks for the links Lynn.

I introduced the first bottle at 7 weeks and she did fine, then the second one a week later. Then I got a little lazy and would offer one periodically (the nanny doing the feeding). Lu wouldn't take it. So I ended up just nursing her. Same as last night. Ties my stomach in knots to hear her cry. I'll be persistent.

If you're in the room does the baby sense it or smell the mother?

Hopefully she's just holding out for the "right" bottle!

Once we started doing bottles - for a looong time DS got at least one every day to keep in the "habit". On the weekends DH would give a bottle and I'd go pump at the same time in another room.

With DS we didn't practice with bottles until about 1 week before he had to go to daycare. He was MAD!!!! It was horrible, but we just had to get him hungry and frustrated enough to take it. I had to not nurse him (that was HARD) until he would do it. I had no other choice because he had to be taking a bottle readily for daycare.

My DD is 10 weeks old. We started giving her practice bottles at around 4 weeks old. She took them fine for about a week (only gave 2 a week) and then decided she had had enough of that. Now we give her a "practice" bottle every evening. I only put an ounce of EBM in the bottle and then nurse her afterward. I don't think she needs a full bottle since it's just for practice. I then pump about an hour after she goes to bed to have more EBM the next day.

With some babies I think that the nipple brand matters. For others, I think that they know that if they wait long enough they can just hold out for the real thing.

    Good Luck!

Practice makes perfect as they say. She'll get one today.
