    We used to deal with the same thing, my aunt always wanted to give DS a chicken bone at the dinner table at family dinners. Even at a year I wasn't going to let him gnaw on a bone.

    Giving him a plate (one that suctioned to his tray/the table) and a spoon really helped and let him have something to keep him occupied

    DS did the lunge thing, too. We gave him silverware to play with (read: gnaw on) - I'd put it on the table and let him lunge for it instead of my food. PPs are right on - they don't know what they're missing, so they're not missing it; it's just adult projection. You're doing great, mama - and 6mo will be here before you know it.
