    Default Hole in Bag!!

Hello ladies!! Got a question for ya... I freeze my milk in either the gerber or lanisoh bags, and I thaw it in the fridge... It seems like half the time the bags have holes in them, and I dont know it until it starts thawing! My DH and I have been throwing the bag with the milk in it away if it has a hole in it.... We are wasting a lot of milk!!! Is this necesssary to throw it away or can i transfer the frozen milk in the bag with the milk in it to another bag? Or because it has been exposed it is all trash?? Please help, I am so tired of wasting my precious milk!!

That's a lot of holes, are they all from the same lot of bags? I'd just buy a new package. Are you writing on them with a pen or anything?

I'd probably put the bag in another larger ziploc bag before you defrost. I'd still use all the milk even if it leaked into another bag.

How are you defrosting? Maybe that's something to do with it?

I never had a bag spring a leak, but just in case, I would always set the bag of milk in a cereal bowl while defrosting in the fridge. That way, if it did leak, the milk would still be contained in the bowl and could probably be salvaged.

Wow, I use the same brand of bags and have never had this happen, thank goodness. Maybe you could try and double bag them?

Thanks, ladies !! Yea, I put them in a tupperware bowl in the fridge as they defrost! But, we usually throw the milk out that has leaked out of the bag into the tupperware away! I guess because we think it is contaminated!!
I have a whole freezer full of milk, so sometimes when I open the freezer some fall out onto the floor, i guess causing a hole! U got me!!

BUT, you ladies think its ok to keep the milk that has leaked out ??

Well, I always had a hard time throwing away ANY breastmilk if I could help it, so if a bag were to leak into a bowl it was sitting in, I am sure I would have saved it. Especially if it was still cold in the frig.

Is the tupperware clean? If so I'd use it!!

ETA: Your milk is "alive" and antibacterial, so it's tougher than you think!

    Exclamation Re: Hole in Bag!!

I know one thing I've learned from reading the fine print on my Lansinoh storage bags: it says that for the cleanest possible plastic, they make the bags with VIRGIN plastic...meaning that there are no added chemicals to allow for stretching of the plastic like a grocery bag or trash bag does. So they warn to handle the stored milk VERY CAREFULLY because even the slightest bump could cause a frozen bag to break or create holes.
