The Nipple Sandwich is a technique one that helps make latching-on easier for some mothers.

A mother basically use the C-Hold or U-Hold & gently squeezes her fingers & thumb slightly together (sort of "flattens" the areola area)... mother pushes in toward her chest wall or ribs... then, she pushes in with her thumb more than with her fingers. Mom then encourages baby to open wide & pulls in close...

I'm sure the LC's you're working with can show you some other literature... I'll look to see if I can find some, too.

    take care,

Just wanted to add that there are many positives about them, just as long as it's used as a *tool* to help a mom get to her breastfeeding goal.
Since you're working with an experienced LC, this is important.

That must feel wonderful to get baby back to breast, with a little help. Congrats!

Awesome! I know you've wanted this and have been trying for awhile!
My theory is ... do whatever works!!
I used a nipple shield for a few weeks and had no problems with my supply.

I just wanted to give an update-we are now exclusively breastfeeding ! It has been difficult at times but we stuck with it. There was times when I thought about giving her a bottle because she would only feed 5 mins at a time and I knew she was hungry. It has been 2 days and tonight she, for the first time, fully drained my breast. After the feeding she was a different baby because she had her fill.

We are still using the nipple shield most of the time. I have been slowly taking it away and she will latch onto my breast without it. There was times where I thought, "do I really want to keep doing this",because this is new to both of us. The last time I bf her was when she was 6 weeks and now she is 5 months! That is a big leap! Bigger baby and different personality! There was biting and a whole lot of crying yet, we are now at peace with the change .

Whenever I felt like giving up I would get on the computer and come to the forums. This site gave me the positive boost to keep going. Thanks to all who listened and gave me strength!

    Thank you all ,

    Beth
