    Default needs multivitamin??

DD went for her 4-month-check up today and did great. The ped said that the AAP recently released a statement recommending that breastfed infants receive a multivitamin supplement, based on studies in northern states where many babies have a vit d deficiency. We live in Texas, where there is no shortage of sun. She said that formula has vitamin supplementation and that rice cereal would if she were on solids yet. I looked all over the AAP website to see if I could find out more but I can't find anything. Has anyone else heard of this?? I thought the bm had all the nutrients babies need.

My ped recommended vitamins from week 1 and I have been giving my DD them. They don't seem to upset her stomach at all. After your post, Ailish's Mom, I decided to do a little research myself. Here's what I found:

The current recommendations seem to say the Vitamin D is okay. However, you mentioned that your doctor wants you to give your DD a "multivitamin" supplement. Supplemental IRON at this point is generally not a good idea, unless your baby actually was tested and has an iron deficiency, because it actually interferes with the baby's absorption of the iron in your BM and is likely to cause stomach upset and/or constipation.
It used to be thought that BM did not have enough iron for babies, but actually your baby's body absorbs a much higher percentage of the iron in your BM than she would from other sources.

I'm sooo confused about this. We just had dd's 6 month check up this week. Dr. had advised at her 4 month to start poli vi sol w/ iron vitamins. I didn't. This month she was really on me for not having started them and said I really should b/c 6 months is a natural low point for babies iron. What gives?? She's really supportive of b'fing so I assumed she would be informed, but maybe not so much?? Maybe I need to ask where she's getting her info I still haven't given my LO any vitamins at all. Is this a bad idea?

    Thanks

My ds is 8 mo and has never had solids or vitamins and is doing great. If you're concerned and/or your pedi is trying to make you give a vitamin, just request that the levels of your baby be checked to prove deficiency. If there is none, then problem solved, if so, then maybe give a vitamin. However, I am definitely of the belief that if you have a feeling against what your pedi is telling you, you should listen to your instincts and demand an explanation before you do anything. I think we would know if our babies had deficiencies. ya know?

The ped recommended Polyvisol, which I guess has iron. I might look for a supplement without iron. I have no problem following the doc's recs as long as dd tolerates it ok, i just thought the bm was sufficient. I still take prenatal vits too.

Human milk is the perfect food for little human babies, just like cat milk is the perfect milk for kittens and dog's milk is the perfect milk for puppies. Human milk is NOT deficient in anything.

You can read some info about the vitamin D debate in these links:

There was some discussion over iron in baby vitamins. Here is some (non-LLL), evidence-based information on iron:
