Default Help! I think I have an abcess

Its been weeks since I had the discomfort of a plugged duct, I did everything I was told, like hot showers, massages, breastfeeding and expressing milk. Days passed and the lump was still there, I was waiting for the mastitis to come, since i had once experienced it. It never really did, not by the common symptoms. But the lump was still there and I breastfed a lot and applied moist heat and tried different positions. Also felt feverish and I've been feeling tired. I believe its been almost a month and the lump is bigger. Right now I feel a lot of pain and there's redness all around the area, it itches, too. I'm going to the doctors to get more info and some antibiotics but I want you guys to help out cuz doctors sometimes are not the most bf'ing friendly.

This sounds like mastitis to me, especially since you've been feeling feverish and tired.

I'm glad you're going to the doc for antibiotics. Other than using antibiotics to beat back the infection, the best thing you can do is what you've been trying to do: empty the breast. Pump, nurse, vary your nursing position, keep baby's chin pointing at the plug, etc. Don't let your docs tell you that you must wean, because that's the worst thing you can do. You might want to take some soy lecithin- it's supposed to help with plugged ducts- and also ask your doc about ultrasound treatment, which is supposed to break up plugs. If they don't seem to know enough, ask for a referral to a breast specialist.

I hope this clears up soon! You're a trooper for putting up with a plug for so long.

It's definitely time to get a doctor to look at it. You should be able to get a prescription for antibiotics that are breastfeeding safe. The home remedies you have tried are great too.

Hang in there . . . I hope you heal up very soon.
