    Default Not eating long enough?

I have a 3 month old daughter who only nurses 3-5 minutes TOTAL! I know I have read that you should not watch the clock but it is bothersome that her weight gain is a bit slower than what "they" say. She does have at least 2-3 BM per day and a plentiful number of wet diapers. She is very curious and wants to look around when she is done eating. She does eat every 2-3 hours during the day and 4-5 hours at night. I guess I either need reassuance that it is ok to nurse this short amount of time or ideas as to how to keep her eating longer. I have tried to keep the distractions to a bare minimum but it seems that when she is done, she's done!

Thanks for your help and your thoughts!

you may just have a very effective suckler! she may be getting all the milk she needs in that 3-5 minutes. i know it seesm like a short time frame to be at the breast, but it sounds like she's doing okay with the number of poopy and wet diapers. if you are really concerned, you should be able to go see a lactation specialist...they can weigh your little one before you breastfeed her and then weigh her after she nurses to see how much she's actually taken in.
also, you may want to nurse her where there is nothing exciting to look at (e.g., a plain boring room perhaps?!) so that she's not too distracted.

Funny - I posted almost an identical thread not too long ago. That sounds exactly like my DS... 3-5 minutes total no matter what. My DS is 12 weeks tomorrow and just the last couple of days he has started to eat longer - and will often eat from the other side for a minute or two - much slower mind you. At the beginning I had OALD and so much milk that he didn't know what to do with it except I guess try to swallow it as fast as he could. I think he just learned to deal with the fast and furious flow of milk so he became a very effecient eater. The folks on this forum made me feel so much better as I was a nervous wreck for so long. Same as you, he had plenty of BM and wet diapers a day, and he was gaining weight just fine. I can't really offer any advice except to say that I know what you are going through and how horribly worried you probably were as I was in tears all the time thinking I was starving my baby. Anyways, he is a very happy laid back baby who barely ever fusses... He eats about every 2 hours during the day and every 4 to 5 (sometimes a stretch of 6 - 6.5) at night. I think he might be going through a growth spurt hence his longer eating in the last few days.

Hang in there! Its taken me 12 weeks to accept that he is healthy and happy! I also worry about my milk supply b/c he doesnt eat very long, but again everyone on the forum has assured me that supply and demand is failproof. He obviously just gets all the milk he needs very quickly!
