So, this is an update. I went to the Peds GI, and she basically told me that I'm not feeding my daughter enough because I haven't started her on solids yet. She said, "At this age (6 months), babies need more than just breastmilk." Can you believe that? I felt so belittled. Why can't doctors read what the AAP says????

And, she didn't run any tests. She just told me to come back in a week (!!!) if my LO was still stooling so often, with blood and mucous in the stool. I can't believe I have to wait another week. I really don't want to go back to this doctor.

Find another dr! I wouldn't want to go back to her, either. Hopefully it is a virus and will get better soon. You might talk to a more receptive dr about possibly using probiotics. I've read (from Dr. Sears, I think) that sometimes a virus can have lasting effects b/c it gets the gut flora out of whack. Might check The Baby Book or his website for info on that.

Thank you so much for that advice. I have never heard about probiotics, but it makes sense to me. I am going to get that book from the library!

I wouldn't take my child there ever again. The way that doctor treated you guys showed she's completely ignorant about breastfeeding. If you do go back to her you should be prepared to give her some facts about BF and tell her that it is wrong to say you're not feeding LO enough. I agree with the others that it probably is a virus and would also just wait and see. Although it seems worrisome, if LO seems to be feeling fine and eating well, there probably is no harm in waiting.

my first ped. told me to start my son on solids because at 6 mo. he had dropped from the 90th percentile to in the 50th. She didn't take into consideration that he had started moving around more, etc. She was NOT in favor of me exclusively bf and really pushed me to start food before I was ready. Needless to say, we switched peds. Hope you can find a ped. that supports your choice to ebf. Don't let anyone tell you it's not enough for your lo. Hope your baby is better soon. Keep us updated!

Thanks guys! My regular ped is totally supportive about EBF, it's the specialist she sent me to (Ped GI) who was so wierd about it. She also told me I should be feeding LO solids twice/day, but then she said I shouldn't start any solids while LO is having these stool issues. Talk about mixed messages! I am very firm in my convictions, and do not plan to supplement or force solids on my LO, who is clearly NOT interested yet. I totally appreciate all the support I find on these boards!

Wait til I go to my LLL meeting next week, they are going to get a kick out of this.

BTW: LO is still stooling every diaper, still green and still mucousy. She is also still happy and eating all the time.

I would def get a second opinion if you still see blood after awhile. Isn't it scary how ignorant some people can be about BF? Especially doctors!!
