Thread: Out of ideas (sore nipples)

Default Out of ideas (sore nipples)

I don't know what to do. My son is 11 weeks old and seems to be getting enough breastmilk, but I am in so much pain when he nurses. I have been to my lactation consultant and even saw a specialist twice who just last week clipped my sons tongue for a very slight tongue tie. We thought that would help when nursing but the pain still persists. Not to mention he gets gassy when I have dairy so I have to stay away from that and I love milk! I want to give up breastfeeding because of these obsticals but the thought of stopping also makes me very sad. I don't know what else to do to correct the pain. I have even been given a very strong ointment that hasn't seemed to help. I nursed so easily with my 1st, I am at my wits end this time. Any suggestions?

Have you had any relief since the tongue clip last week? If it was very severe sometimes a second clip is needed. Do you have a follow up appointment? You might see about going in to look again.

Also if your nipples were very damaged it can take awhile for them to feel better, what are you doing now to heal them? Does the Lactation Consultant say it looks like there is a good latch now?

Hang in there mama, this is a lot to go though but there are better days ahead.

I had a lot of pain nursing in the beginning with my son, and the lactation consultant couldn't find anything wrong. Eventually, it resolved on its own - I think my son just got more experienced with nursing. Hopefully that will happen with you very soon. Maybe the tongue-tie was the problem but you just haven't healed yet? I hope things get better for you very soon.

DS had his tongue tie clipped at about the same age (9 weeks) and it took him two or three weeks to learn how to suck rather than chomp to get milk. Did the LC check you for possible thrush?
