Thread: What's the best time to pump to store excess milk?

Default What's the best time to pump to store excess milk?

I want to pump some "extra" milk for special occasions (date nights with hubby, happy hour with girlfriends, etc...) but I don't want to disrupt my baby’s supply. I'm exclusively breast feeding right now and I would not say that I have an abundance of milk. What is the best time to pump while making sure that my baby gets the right amount of milk at her next feeding?

If baby is sleeping longer stretches at night, pump after first feeding for extra. Also, if sleeping through the night, pump one breast first thing in the morning and have baby feed from the other. Or get up in the middle of the night (yuck).

I have always found that pumping after the first morning feed produces the most milk for storage.

I think I've heard that pumping in the wee hours of the morning is the best time...something like between 3 & 6am. If my LO woke up around those times, I usually nursed one side and pumped the other. I set the pump up before bed so I didn't have to fumble around half asleep.
