You know your baby best, so don't be afraid to follow your instincts regardless of the timetable. The biggest thing I think is to make sure whatever you give him that's not pureed is soft and mushable, so even if he doesn't "chew", he can mush it. It's also a texture thing, so maybe baby doesn't like mushed banana texture, but may like chunky sweet potato... Just keep offering and trying with what you feel safe with and as baby progresses, you can move on to other things. Gerber puffs are a great thing to start with as a finger food, since they dissolve almost instantly. My pedi recommended them at 6 mos, because they also help with hand eye coordination. Bonus- they keep them occupied, so you can take a few bites of your own food too! HTH...
