    Default chunks vs. strips?

What works best, bite size chunks of foods or french fry style strips of food for a baby learning how to self feed? The stips kind of freak me out...I'm afraid she will get too much in her mouth. What are your experiences?

IME the strips allow them to put less in their mouth at once because she could hold the strip and take a mouth-sized bite. When I gave chunks she tended to just shove the whole chunk in her mouth regardless of size. Though if it freaks you out you could just make sure the chunks are small enough.

My lo generally took to big of bites pretty often, especially with bananas, but it would usually just squeeze back out the front of her mouth when she'd bite down on it.

We really liked strips over chunks. It seemed to give him a better grip. If he had a handful of a chunk he just shoved it in his mouth. But with the strips he could bite pieces off and still have a good grip on the food.

    I'm more comfortable with strips.

I'm really dumb about this...Did you do this as a "BLS" thing? Skipped purees and just offered soft, strip-style veggies, etc? Before teeth?

Yup, that's what we did. I started with soft things like banana and avacado and worked our way up. I think she may have had a few teeth already, but mainly used her gums to chew.

Yep - true chewing doesn't happen until LO get molars which is usually much later.

My test - if it was soft enough for me to eat without needing to use my teeth (just use my tongue & the roof of my mouth) then IMO it was soft enough for DS to tackle.
