Thread: Swallows after letdown

    Default Swallows after letdown

What would you say should be the minimum amount of time swallowing after a letdown? I just got my LO back to the breast, and as of today, she is literally only swallowing for maybe 30 seconds after each letdown, i will have maybe 3-4 in 30 minutes. And she seems to nurse sleeping. Whenever i nurse her she falls asleep, but continues nursing (albeit not very fast) it takes me a long time to have each letdown since she is sleeping and nursing. She seems to be having alot of pee diapers (maybe 7-8 a day) But not absolutely SOAKING. We are still fighting about the boob, but she will eventually give in after a few minutes screaming, but the it's straight to sleepy nursing. Is this normal? She will nurse very wakeful occasionally, but come off to blow rasberries and smile. I take that as she isn't hungry because she is tough to persuade back on because she wants to play. So to sum this up (lol) when she is actually Very hungry she will fight me for maybe 5 minutes, even after the first letdown, then give in, get drowsy, but continue to nurse, then do some choppy sucks until the next letdown and swallow actively for maybe 30 seconds, then continue choppy sucks, (with an occasional swallow) then get another letdown or 2 with only 30 seconds of drinking afterwards. It seems to me like she isn't swallowing enough and she is getting angry for that reason. Am i paranoid?

My daughter participated in a study when we were in the ICN and the said that most term newborns will do about 50-60 sucks after a let down then rest for a few seconds then another 40 or more sucks. So when I brought my DD home from the hospital there were days that we counted. She would start with 10-15 then about 30 once let down occurred it was about 60. then back to 15-20 ant a time. I have not done this since she was about a month old. She has always been a fast nurser (about 10 minutes total for the first 2- 2 1/2 months). Sorry that is all the info I have though.

Thank you for that reply. It was exactly what i was trying to figure out.

She has been having green poops now though... I think i may be feeding her too often, and not long enough each time...maybe it is a fore milk/hind milk issue. It is the only thing i can think of. There was also a few specks of blood in her diaper. I am pretty sure it's not a dairy allergy, as she has been supplemented with formula a while ago and never had any blood (that i noticed). She has been nursing like every hour, but only for a few minutes. Plenty of pees and poos. (just the wrong color) I feel as if i am starting anew when she is 3.5 months since i EP'd for so long. Does anyone have any suggestions on the green poop?

See if anything in this article sounds familiar to you guys? Block feeding can sometimes help when your baby doesn't seem to "finish" the breast.
