    Default Vitamin D while breastfeeding?

A friend of mine asked if I was supplementing vitamin D while breastfeeding or if my pediatrician told me I should.

My pediatrician has not mentioned a need to supplement vitamin D so I am not. My friends ped told her too and so she does, I think 2-3 times a day.

    Does anyone else do this?

Nope, live in the new orleans area, plenty of sun light. My friend is in town visiting, she lives in Charlotte N. Carolina but will be moving back in July.

The body makes vitamin D from sunlight. For most babies indirect sunlight provides plenty of Vit D.

Does indirect sunlight also mean through a window?

I give my lo vit d in the winter because we live in the Northeast. Not alot of sunshine and too cold. I give her the JUst D for breastfed infants.

I don't plan on giving it to her in the summer.

I also gave my lo the "Just D" during the winter. But, they say if they get 15-20 min's a day dressed but without a hat, that's enough sun to produce the D they need. So now that it's nice out, I don't usually give her any. I think some ped's are just trying to be cautious. You have to decide what makes sense for you.

I'm having the same issue. My aunt who is a pediatrician says my LO should have vitamins but my pediatrician says it isn't necessary. Just one more thing to worry about.

This is an issue I had with my old pedi and the vits she recomended were made my a formula company!!! I was so pissed when I discovered that that I switched to another more BFing friendly pedi in the practice.
