Lyn - I find it helps to actually remind DS to "bite" and "chew chew chew swallow" and demonstrate those things by doing them. And we remind him that he may not put more food in his mouth until he's swallowed.

ETA: we also "coach" DS to ask me or DH to cut his food if it's bigger than what he feels he can eat by himself.

    Popcorn After 18months.

Raw veggies-At between 7-8months we were doing snap peas, and celery. We obviously waited on Carrots.
Apples with peel- By nine months EVERY DAY.
    Tortilla chips-Never.

    Nuts-16months.
Sunflower seeds right after a year.

Why did you obviously wait on carrots? That's one of Waylons favorite chew toys--should I not be doing those?

Because of the nitrates. There seems to be some debate on whether or not it's an issue, but we waited.
Wait. There is an issue as to WHEN it's an issue, when in Doubt we wait until after the year point.

Popcorn? My mom said you're not supposed to give this until they are 2, but I can't remember why. Something to do with inhaling the kernel skins or something.

Raw veggies? Around 9 months? Carrots, celery, cucumber...

    Apples WITH peels? 9 mos?

Tortilla Chips? Only recently...15 mos or so?

Nuts? 16 mos? I bite them in half if they're big, but she looooves almonds.

Seeds? She's been eating these in bread for ages...probably around 8-9 mos. I don't think I've ever given them to her alone.

    DD just turned 20 months.

Popcorn - still not yet, probably not for a while. I have seen too many adults choke on it and I'm scared to let DD try! I've also heard the 2 year age like Paige was told.

Raw Veggies - she used carrots and celery as teething toys for a few times. Just recently (19 months) did I let her eat raw carrots that were in thin sticks. She's tried soft veggies like cucumber, zucchini, etc. when she was after a year old. She still doesn't like them much.

Apple with peels - I'm only now experimenting with that.

Raw nuts - nope. Scared to try that too.

Seeds - (I'm assuming you mean whole seeds, not milled flaxseed and things like that or seeds cooked into a soft texture in foods?) I was just thinking about that yesterday. Maybe I'll let her try some of my shelled sunflower seeds.

Tortilla chips - 18 months old

I think I wait on things because DD was a later-teether. In Dec-early Feb she got in her last 7 teeth at once, so she's still perfecting the art of "chewing" well. When I feel she chews better, I'll see about nuts.
Unfortunately, she was a later-teether with all her first teeth, but the 2 year molars are now making their way in early!
