Default Feeding intervals/length of feed for 5 week old?

My daughter is 5 weeks old, and in the last few days she seems to only want to feed every 3 hours and sometimes 4. Is that OK? She does have wet and poopy diapers after every feeding and was gaining 1 oz a day at her 1-month checkup. Also, I've read that the baby should get 15 to 20 minutes on each breast. But at some feedings, she'll only give me 8 minutes of vigorous sucking/swallowing on one breast before she comes off, and then maybe 5 minutes on the other. If I try relatching her, she'll scream bloody murder, so I assume she is full, but I don't really know.

Sounds like she's doing great; gaining well and having plenty of wet diapers. As far as the amount of time she spends nursing, try not to time it. My LCs always told me not to watch the clock. Your LO may just be getting the hang of nursing and needs less time to empy the breast.

As long as your dc is still gaining weight like she's susposed too. Just feed her on demand and as long as she is healthy and happy then I wouldn't stress about it. Does she only get bm?

She has plenty of wet diapers, too. It's hard for me to say how many are "soaking wet" because I change her often. But nearly every diaper has urine in it and I would say that if she goes for three hours without a diaper change it's nearly always very wet. She has some BM with every feed because she uses the first few sucks of the nipples to get things moving, then settles in for real feeding. Things probably are fine -- after all, she never howls with hunger -- but we got off to a rough start with breast feeding (she spent 5 days in the NICU due to a congenital kidney defect) and she lost 14 ounces (from a 10 lb 4 oz birth weight) in the first eight days before she started gaining again. I had a lactation consultant come to my home. She helped with latch-on, a good position, and pumping advice to increase my supply, but I haven't found her useful since. And I guess I'm just worried that things aren't as OK as they seem. Maybe I will take her to get weighed again before her 2 month checkup just for peace of mind.

I feel like an idiot. I assumed BM meant bowel movement, but after browsing I see it means breast milk. Yes, she is only getting breast milk. When I was pumping to increase my supply, I gave her whatever I pumped after the previous feeding after the next feeding, to help her gain weight. Now I'm pumping just two or three times a day (usually overnight) and freezing what I collect. I've tried to give her an ounce or two in a bottle after breast feeding to see if she would take, and she either rejects it or drinks it very slowly, which I guess is another sign she's getting enough.

That is good then. Just let her eat whenever she wants and everything should be just fine. Don't stress about it as long as she is healthy then everything will be aokay.

my boy is 5 weeks old as well and he is only on the breast for 5-8 min at each feeding. he eats every 3-4 hours and sometimes cluster feeds in the evening. he is gaining weight steadily and seems very content after each meal. my lc told me the same, don't watch the clock and just feed on demand.

My baby was/is the same way. He's 5 1/2 months now and still a very quick feeder. He eats longer now, but in the first couple of months, he would eat for about 7 minutes, often from only one side. I was so worried, but the lactation specialist I talked to said 1)Don't feed by the clock, feed by what he wants 2) As long as he's gaining weight and has wet and dirty diapers, he's fine.

    Hope this helps
