Default he's chewing my nipples :(

My baby is four days old and breastfeeding went very well in the hospital. Now that we are home he started to bite on my nipples so hard that I cry. He is successfully feeding, but I can barely stand the pain and I'm scared ever time I bring him to my breast. Please help!

Is it possible that you have overactive letdown (OALD)? "Chewing" or clamping down on the nipple is one way that a baby deals with a too-rapid milk flow. You might also notice a clicking sound as he nurses, or a lot of gagging and choking, or a lot of gas.

If it's not OALD, how is your latch? When your baby lets go of your breast, what do your nipples look like? Are they shaped more like pencil erasers (symmetrical) or new lipsticks (asymmetrical)? Are you seeing any cracking or bleeding?

Hang in there, Mama!!! There early days ARE the hardest.

Thank you. Our fourth Lactation Consultant gave me some nipple shields.
