    Exclamation Baby won't open enough!

Help! My 6 week old son will not open his mouth enough to take in the whole areola. Although I have known of this problem (ouch!) since birth, I was too concerned with his weight gain and my milk supply to correct the problem. Now that he is chubbing up, the sore nipples are becoming unbearable. Is it too late to fix this? Any techniques? Also, I wonder if sucking ONLY on the nipple is inhibiting his intake? Thank you!

I was taught to make a "nipple sandwich," supporting my breast with thumb and fingers making a "U" or a "C," and squeezing that U or C together so that my areola got shaped into a flat sticking-out thing (wow, this is really hard to explain in words -- anyone got a link with pictures?). The "sandwich" needs to be in line with the corners of the baby's mouth. So if baby is in cradle or cross-cradle hold, then her mouth will be vertical, and the "sandwich" also needs to be vertical.

Say "open" and model what you want your baby to do. Even very young babies can mimic facial expressions. There are some more helpful tips here:
