    Unhappy Please help!!

My 5 week old has had a hard time gaining weight. After losing about a pound and a half by the 2 week check up, the pediatrician asked me to supplement with the breast milk I had stored from my days of engorgement.
After two weigh ins, she was gaining about 1.5 oz/day. Today at a follow up appt, she had only gained 3 oz. This was very disturbing The Dr. recommended nursing and supplementing with 2oz of formula after every feeding. I am fearful that my milk supply will dwindle down to nothing and I desperately want to breastfeed exclusively!! Any advice?

    Birthweight 7.12oz
    Day 4 7.4oz
    2weeks 6.6oz
    2weeks 2 days 6.8
    3weeks 2 days 6.13
    5weeks 2 days 7.0

I'm not a doctor or a specialist or anything of the sort - but from my understanding, if a breastfed baby is gaining there is no need to supplement. As long as your LO is having 6 or more wet diapers and a few poo diapers in a 24 hour period that means she is getting a good supply of mommy's milk. I wouldn't supplement unless she stopped gaining.

with that said, however I would try a few things. Maybe your LO isn't getting enough of the fatty hind milk. Make sure she is draining one breast before starting another (this may mean that she will only take one breast per feeding) and make sure you keep yourself hydrated.

I totally agree. We rarely get to both breasts per feeding.

Are you afraid that he is not nursing as long as he should or that you are not producing as you should? Funugreek is an herbal pill that increases milk production. Pumping between feedings also increases milk production. Any weight gain is good and check where the ped gets his guidelines. I found out that the stats in my peds office was based on a formula fed baby!
