Default constipation - miralax and other ??

I have several questions about constipation. My daughter is 7 months old and we started solids around 5 1/2 months. She has struggled with constipation from the beginning. I am feeding her prunes every day and having her drink water (although she will not take more than 2 oz or so). The dr. finally put her on miralax for a week. It worked great, although she only poops every three days or so. We took her off the miralax and she is constipated again (although the stools are not as hard as before, she really strains to go and it is thick but not hard---not sure if that is even normal??). so my questions in summary are:
    1. Anyone use miralax - any worries about using that regularly.
    2. Is pooping every three days or so normal (she is a very happy baby and only seems uncomfortable right before she has to go)
    3. Poop is thick but not hard, but she does strain to get it out - is that considered constipation.
    4. Any other advice?

My baby is 10 months old and he suffers from CHRONIC constipation. It is really bad. He screams everytime he goes. It is awful.

Anyways, we have seen 2 specialist and the last one we went to prescribed the miralax. I haven't given it to him because after researching it on line I learned that it is not FDA approved for children under 2. That makes me a little nervous. The specialist told me not to worry about it. He also told me that it was perfectly safe to use it for as long as we needed to. I just haven't given it to him. I'm trying flax seed oil. It hasn't fixed the problem, but it has helped. Have you tried that? I put the oil directly into everything I feed him.

I have no idea what is normal, because my LO has not had a normal bowel movement since he started solid food. I'm curious what others will say since we were prescribed miralax as well.

We've been using it, and I definitely have some worries about using it in the long term. But not well-defined worries... There doesn't seem to be much scientific data that suggests that Miralax causes problems, but still... As the PP mentioned, it hasn't been tested on very young children. I just don't trust it 100% the way I'd like to. But DD (25 months) has been having some real problems- pooping 1-2 times per week, straining, crying and screaming before pooping. I didn't think I could leave that situation untreated, and prunes weren't cutting the mustard.

Yes. Every three days is at the low end of normal. Anything less frequent than that is constipation.

Okay- this is gross, but it's the way my pediatrician told me you can determine the difference between constipated and non-constipated poop: if you pick up the diaper and flex it away from the poop, does the poop flex with the diaper, or does it stay in a well-defined clump that does not move? If the former, you're okay. If the latter, then it's too hard.

Hang in there, make a poop calendar (it can be hard to remember if your kid went 3 days ago or 4), when your baby is older try to make sure she gets enough exercise, feed her lots of fruit and fiber. And let me know if you find something that works!!!

There is a miralax yahoo group you may want to check out here. I have used diet and glycerin suppositories to help control my DD's constipation. More info to consider: www.fibermenace.com www.behealthy.org.uk/gaps Good luck and PM me if you would like more details.
