I'll occasionally have a glass of wine or a beer then nurse an hour or two later. I don't know the answer though ... hmm, I guess I should find out also!

I'll have a glass of wine with dinner or a beer every now and again (my dad is ramping up to possibly open a microbrewery, so I get to be one of the "test subjects" lol) ... I've heard if you drink right after nursing so there are a couple hours following it it's okay. I went out a couple weekends ago and DH used ebm for me since I had a few more than one

If you're just gonna have a glass or two, Dr. Newman says you don't need to worry at all!

"Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers." http://www.drjacknewman.com/index.ph...d=52&Itemid=79

If you can drive a car than you can nurse. For most people that's no more than 2 drinks. I have a beer every now and then and have nursed right afterwards and haven't worried about it.

If you get wasted that's a different story. I haven't done that before so I'm not exactly sure what the protocol is on that one.

If it is not in your blood, then it is not in your milk, so a couple of hours after you drink (if not too much) then you are fine! One night I drank a couple more than two and my DH gave a bottle of previously EBM I waited until the morning to feed! no problems!

There's a website that contains a chart on the time it takes to clear alcohol from breastmilk based on mother's weight and amount consumed. There's probably an easier way to find it, but this is how I found it:

    go to www.motherisk.org

from right side of screen, choose link "Alcohol, Nicotine, Substance Use"

then from list at top choose "Other Motherisk Publications"

From list of articles, choose "Drinking Alcohol while breastfeeding: will it harm my baby?"

Then, within the text of the article, click on the "Table 1" link.

Some Moms may find this a practical guide.

I read somewhere that one drink, even maybe two was okay. The way they explained it was if you feel the affects of the alcohol, so will the baby.
