Hi there. I am a frustrated mother of a 3-and-a-half week old baby girl. I pump most of the time, and BF once a day. I intended to BF exclusively, but she is a very lazy sucker (taking 1.5 hours or so to finish, and still sometimes not full), and I leak profusely the entire time, so unless I catch the runoff in a bottle while she nurses the other side, and then feed it to her when she is done, she doesn't get enough to eat. =( That routine meant that I was pretty much a human pacifier for days on end with very few minutes between feedings.
In desperation, I started pumping with a Medela PISA. It is a slightly better arrangement, since she is getting enough to eat and gaining weight, my back doesn't ache from the contortionist act anymore, and I get sometimes and hour or so when I am not pumping or feeding. I do still nurse at least once a day, since I have read that the saliva-to-breast is needed to ensure the right immunities are created. But I still barely make enough milk, and sometimes still
have to supplement with formula. I am hoping it is a growth spurt problem... she only weighs 8 pounds, but she eats 3.5-4 ounces every 2.5 hours.
So anyway, I am getting weary of my pumping schedule, and need encouragement. I pump every 3 hours, and I am wondering how long that is necessary? When does the 'spurt' end? When can I safely go 4 or 5 hours between pumps without worrying about supply?
Any help is appreciated.
