Default 5 months old, just started spitting up, mucus in diaper

my son is now 5 months old (as of today) and still EBF-- no solids yet.

just over the last week or so....he has spit up a little bit maybe 2-3x a day.....just a little on his bib. he never did this before.

i looked on kellymom and one reason could be that he's teething...well, he is gnawing on his hands constantly and drools all day long (lots of bibs! lots of laundry!) so it said that he's swallowing a lot of saliva and that could cause this. anyone experience this?

anyhow, i didn't know if it's something I AM eating....i haven't changed anything. i'm just trying to be careful - sometimes if he sits up fast or he's upright right away - he spits up a little. anyhow, just curious as to why it's happening all of a sudden.

the second thing is (and not sure if it's related or not) - is that a few days ago, he had like mucus in his diaper....kind of like egg whites. and there was a tiny bit of blood. i'm talking miniscule. only happened once. and then after that one time, same mustardy/seedy diapers as usual etc etc...i was surprised - but my DH thought it was nothing and said to relax.

i was going to call his pediatrician - but i was curious if this is really rare and an indication of something serious or has it happened to anyone. i mean, i just breastfeed him - and haven't changed anything. do you think this could be a milk allergy and i should cut out dairy or have i just been lucky that his diaper output has been normal every single day and i'm overreacting?

WAHM and exclusively breastfeeding my naturally born son since 9/25/07.

It could be the teething. I've read that while teething or going through an infection their bms could be mucusy and/green. While my son was around 2 months he went through a growth spurt and was drooling A LOT too. During all that time, about two weeks or so, his bms were green and mucusy. It seems like he might be okay since you said he's drooling.

You know, my pediatrician is wonderful about fielding concerns or questions via telephone!! As a first time mama, I am nervous about everything. Although I am a nurse, and am "medically knowledgable" I have found that you just can never know too much about LO's! As my pedi said, he instructed me to call if anything with her "normal" changes. He said that if her bowels, eating habits, or temperment changes and I am concerned to just give them a call. That is what they are there for! I personally always call, at least it gives me piece of mind!

Green mucus can signal a sensitivity in the baby to a food you have eaten recently.

BB had the same thing early on and it turns out once I cut milk out (even lactose in the Singulair I was taking) it went away. He's 7 1/2 months old now and doesn't have any issues with diary.

I agree with pp! My lo was having mucousy green stools and it was because of my Venti Starbucks Latte!!! So, probably the milk... I was having one almost daily for awhile (decaf, unfortunately), and when I cut those out, her poo returned to mustard! As soon as you figure it out something else will baffle you, but I wouldn't worry too much about this one!
