I would think it would have to do with why the first was premature. I don't have personal experience with this, but my DH's first wife had placenta previa with twins (who didn't make it) and again with second pregnancy - DH's son, who did make it and is a wonderful 14 year old stepson to me. Her first pg, though (not with DH) was normal. Don't know about other conditions.

This is only what happened to me, I can't tell you what is normal. My first was induced so I don't know what would have happened with him. My second was 5wks early and my third was 3wks early. I don't know if that was coincidental or not.

The pp is correct in that it most likely depends on the reason for the premie. and how much "premie" the baby is...

My mother delivered two of her five children prematurely, and my sister and I both had bedrest for extended periods with our pregnancies because of preterm contractions that may or may not have resulted in a preterm delivery had we not had medication to stop them.

I think the answer is "sometimes". If the mother's physiology had a role to play in the previous premature birth, it would be more likely.

Could you tell us a bit more about the situation? Perhaps we could google you up a link or two.

The mom has had two miscarriages that were pretty far along. There were also several pregnancies that were lost almost immediately. There was one child who made it but was born at 30 weeks.Doctors couldnt be sure why, they di a lot of checking/tests. The best theory at moment was that the mother has had chemo in the past fora blood and lymph node cancer, and that it may have affected her muscles and reprductive systems. It was thought at one time that she would never be able to carry, then there was a success. It ws also suggested at the time of illness that it may cause an inability to conceive

that is interesting- how far along were the miscarriages? my dr. has found that my anticardiolipin levels are off- and that is exactly what happens from that- miscarriages one after another that are very early and if the babies do make it farther, it is very likely that you will sustain pregnancy and miscarry later- usually in the 2nd trimester. i am so blessed to have my two little boys- both born early- one at 35 wks and one at 32wks. i have been advised for this and other health reasons that it is too big of a risk to have more children- have they done full blood tests on your friend? i would have never found out i had this problem if it weren't for a very good doctor wanting to understand why i got as sick as i did with my babies (i had pre-e)... you friend could look into getting some blood work done and then if things aren't right going to a specialist to learn more about how to achieve a healthier pregnancy.
