    Default Engorged and Latching Problems

Ok, I'm sorry for hijacking the other gals thread. I usually do the football hold on the left side and cradle for the right. Today I had to pump almost 5oz from both breasts combined to get to the point where she would latch on. As I try to get her to latch, she cries and arches her back if I try to put her on the breast as she opens her mouth. I tried the reverse pressure softening but I was using three fingers on each side of the nipple. Do I put the peace sign at 9:00 and 3:00 or 12:00 and 6:00?

I think you got to do what ever works for you to get the milk out, part of the swelling is form fluids in your breast tissue that go along with birth.

If you have an iv you can get more engorement problems!

Here's some positioning information that might be helpful. http://www.llli.org/FAQ/positioning.html You might want to pay special attention to your hand placement b/c touching the back of baby's head when latching could cause the arching.

The videos along the right hand side of this page can also be helpful. http://www.thebirthden.com/Newman.html

If you need to give expressed milk temporarily until you get the latch issue worked out, you can use a small cup, syringe, medicine dropper or spoon instead of a bottle to avoid chances of nipple confusion.

She's one week old today. I did have a c-section, so I was on IV for a couple of days. I'm waiting for the LC from the hospital to call me back. Thanks for your help everybody! It's nice to hear things will get better.
