Default Getting pressure to start 3mo on rice cereal soon

EVERYONE has been saying, "Oh, its almost time to start rice cereal soon" to me lately. I don't know if I'll get any "advice" or pressure from her ped. at her 4 month appt, but I was really wanting to wait until 6+months to start anything else.
We have a lot of allergies in my family, and I've heard that BFing exclusively longer can help prevent allergies...

Can anyone point me in the right direction for articles, etc. to help me 'back' my decision. I'll feel better if it's an "educated" one :-)

The World Health Organisation advises exclusive breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months and the following link, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, explains in detail the benefits of exclusive brestfeeding.

The early introduction of solids can lead to digestive problems, an increased risk of food allergies and reduced absorption of the valuable iron from breastmilk.

But don't feel you have to justify your decision to anyone else - you know you are doing what is best for your baby.

Oh, you are by no means alone in waiting to delay solids until 6 months! Good for you for standing up to the pressure. It can be hard! The important thing is just to do the reading and research yourself and then use your own judgment.

I love the kellymom.com resources for solids:

There was recently an article but out by the associated press that said, among other things, that rice cereal is terrible (blood sugar spikes up)!
I like this article because it is from the mainstream press, which somehwo impresses people.

The reason people usually start with rice cereal is that it is fortified with iron. However, most BFed babies get enough iron via their Mom's milk (also, your doctor will test baby's iron levels at some point after 6 months and then you can go from there). The downsides to cereal are that it is often constipating and it is a highly processed product. Starting with avocado or banana and then adding protein fairly early is perfectly fine.

I don't have the link handy, but LLL probably has solids guidelines that you can print out and show your family as well.

I was just reading on www.askdrsears.com about solids. They said introducing solids before 6 months is not recommended. There is also info on the site about when to give whole milk (not before 1 yr)
What I found helpful was his explanation of why it's better 2 wait.
