    Default water?

DS is 9 mo old. In the 10th percentile.

His stools are really hard, but he is not uncomfortable passing them.
He is breastfeeding the same (well) 4 - 6 times a day.
He eats an adult sized meal divided into two mealtimes.

    But...

He isn't having enough wet diapers and they smell REALLY strong.

Because he's small, I didn't want to give him any fluids other than breastmilk. But we're nursing on demand, he's not asking for more...

Do I give water then? How much? when?

My daughter turned 9 months old today! She drinks tap water from her Nuby sippy cup throughout the day however she will only drink about 1-2 oz total from it. I think it def helps with softening stools, everyone tells me she needs juice but we are sticking with water for now.

I 2nd the idea of less solids so he nurses more. His caloric intake from breastmilk will probbably exceed that of most solids you feed. But in general we always give DJ water with meal and have since about the 9month point. I wanted him to get used to the idea of water ONLY with meals and it's worked.

Less solids didn't equal more breastmilk He just got really skinny.

I try to give him nutritionally dense solids - meats, beans, avocado.

I'll try just an ounce or two of water a day and see if that little bit makes a difference.

His 9 mo check up is coming up soon, so I'll try to remember to report back with Dr.'s advice.

not sure where you live, and, my lo is a little older, but we offer water quite frequently because it is soooo hot here. and, if it is his hard stools that are a concern maybe try the "p" foods, peaches, pears, prunes. peaches help alot in softening my ds stools. hth

What kind of foods is he eating? Things like bananas or rice cereal could be causing issues. Is he eating high water foods? Watermelon? Other fruit? As adults, we get a lot of our fluids from the food that we eat aswell as the water that we drink.

I offer water in a sippy cup. He usually drinks maybe 3 oz per day. For example, when I offer egg yolk or toast, he likes to have a drink with that (wouldn't you? )

our LO is almost 10 months and drinks probably 2 oz of water a day. when he started crawling/standing around 8 months, we noticed he got constipated. we think not so much from the solids but from being dehydrated due to him all of a sudden being more active. even when i would breastfeed him, he would still seem "thirsty" after nursing! so i would offer water and he would drink a little. even though 2 oz seems teeny, it does help with getting the poop out and with dehydration. i think if he is not having wetting diapers, then he is dehydrated. the constipation may be from eating solids but also from not having enough water. just a couple of sips in between nursing and also after he eats his solid meals. hope that helps!
