Is it ok to have dental work done while breast feeding?

Yes, just ask for compatible pain meds (use Hale's book as a guide). Also, you do not want to have mercury fooled around with (inserted or removed) while BFing.

I've had more dental work done in the past 13 months than I'd had in the previous 30 years of my life.

Yes, but you should find out which meds they will be using ahead of time so you can double check them with an LC or LLL leader or some other reliable source.

While it is best to put this off until after you are done BFing, if a mercury filling absolutely MUST be removed, there are some precautions the dentist can take to reduce exposure.

Most local anesthesia disappears from the system relatively quickly. Novocain, for example, has a half-life of 7.7 minutes. It takes about 5 half-lives for something to be completely gone, so it would be out of your system in well under an hour.
